On the trail of Cardinal Clemens August Earl von Galen

A WARM WELCOME
to the idyllic Dinklage -
Home of the Cardinal Clemens August Earl von Galen.
In the heart of the Oldenburg Münsterland surrounded by ditches and ramparts, meadows, grasslands and century-old oak trees is the moated castle Dinklage situated, today Benedictine Abbey St. Scholastika. At the start of the 15th-century constructed as 'Dietrichsburg' (one of four castles) by the family of Dinklage, the castle went as estate to the family von Galen due to inheritance disputes in 1801. On the 16. March 1878 Clemens August was born here as the eleventh of thirteen children of the couple Ferdinand von Galen and his wife Elisabeth, nee Countess von Spee. His later life and work as bishop of Münster (consecration: 1933) and cardinal was strongly influenced by his childhood in the Dinklage earl family. In the time of National Socialism von Galen became known beyond German borders due to his sermons against human rights violation and killings by the regime as 'lion of Münster'. He died on the 22. March 1946 shortly after his appointment as cardinal.
